Former IG of Police, Gambo Jimeta
It was a dramatic scene at the expansive all-white colour No. 5, Cassandra Street, Maitama -Abuja home of former Inspector- General of Police, Alhaji Gambo Jimeta who burst into hilarious laughter while responding to sympathizers over his rumoured death.
The news which turned out a hoax had gone viral on social media. Even hours after the news site which ‘broke’ the story had retracted and apologized to the family of the retired police chief, the stream of visitors to the family of the former police top shot could not abate.
Checks by SOUNDBITE NEWS revealed that hundreds of relations, sympathizers and associates of the former IG were surprised to find the former top cop in a hilarious mood over his rumoured death which they said he described as fake news.
A serving Assistant Inspector General who was one of the earliest callers said that many sympathizers at the house were relieved to find the former police chief laughing and joking over the death rumour.
‘’The man is a mystery. We were shocked that he did not make heavy weather of the death rumour. He laughed and joked about it. He thanked us for showing concern. We told him that the rumour was an indication that he will live long,’’ he said.
Unconfirmed reports indicated that the aging former police boss had a successful extensive surgery in the United States last year due to an undisclosed ailment that confined him to a wheel-chair. This was after a prolonged preliminary medical examination at a Chinese hospital in Abuja.
At the time of filing the report, more associates were still trooping to his house where he is a neighbor to a former Minister of Defence, Dr.Bello Haliru Mohammed. They share a mosque between their houses. They are said to enjoy very warm and cordial relationship that extends to their children. Attempts by anxious newsmen for a close-up on the retired IG were sternly rebuffed by security men attached to his house.
Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, believed to be in his 80s hails from Jimeta in Adamawa State. He came into national limelight in 1986 when he was appointed by ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida as Inspector General of Police after Mr. Etim Inyang’s tenure. He was succeeded by Mr. Aliyu Attah. He was a National Security Adviser to President Ibrahim Babangida.
The elder statesman is widely known for expressing his mind either within or out of government. For example, he told an audience in 2013 that Nigeria’s ex- maximum ruler, late General Sani Abacha sacked him because he suggested unconditional release of General Olusegun Obasanjo, late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Ardua and four others from detention. His claims have not been denied by functionaries of the Abacha era till date. Also, at a security summit organized by the Nigeria Police Force and Vanguard Newspapers in 2014, he said:
‘’ Things are going wrong, poverty is everywhere. When you travel from Lagos to Kano, people are living in poor conditions: no water, no security. Criminals are well armed, government functionaries are well guarded while ordinary Nigerians are left to the mercies of criminals…There is a disconnect between the people and the government. Strangulation of the aspiration of the people will result into big implosion; God save Nigeria and Africa if 167 million black people go berserk’’.
